bauma Munich 2028: Exhibition Stand Design & Build Guide for International Exhibitors

At most exhibitions, the stand architecture is the largest physical object on the booth.

At bauma, that is often not true.

Your exhibition stand may need to accommodate:

  • excavators;

  • loaders;

  • construction vehicles;

  • mining equipment;

  • concrete machinery;

  • crushers;

  • attachments;

  • lifting systems;

  • engines;

  • components;

  • building-material machinery;

  • digital construction technology.

Some products can weigh several tonnes.

Others may require operating demonstrations, large safety zones, specialist transport, lifting equipment or outdoor installation.

That means exhibition stand design for bauma Munich 2028 starts with engineering and logistics — not decoration.

The next bauma takes place from 3–9 April 2028 at Messe München. The organizer describes it as the world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment.

For an international exhibitor, the stand has to answer three questions quickly:

What do you manufacture?

What can your equipment do?

Why should a contractor, dealer or project owner choose you?

Why bauma Matters

Few trade fairs operate at the scale of bauma.

The 2025 edition recorded:

  • 605,974 visitors

  • 3,548 exhibitors

  • exhibitors from 57 countries

  • visitors from more than 200 countries and regions

  • 200,000 m² of indoor exhibition space

  • 414,000 m² of outdoor space.

The fair brings together the global construction and mining ecosystem, including:

  • manufacturers;

  • contractors;

  • dealers;

  • distributors;

  • engineers;

  • mining companies;

  • construction groups;

  • infrastructure organizations;

  • technology providers;

  • purchasing teams.

The 2025 final report also highlighted particularly strong growth in visitors from countries including Türkiye, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, Romania and the Netherlands.

For manufacturers looking for international distribution, bauma is therefore much more than a branding exercise.

It is a major business-development platform.

Start With the Machinery

At bauma, the first question for the stand designer should not be:

What style do you like?

It should be:

What are you bringing to Munich?

For every major product, confirm:

  • dimensions;

  • weight;

  • transport method;

  • lifting points;

  • operating clearance;

  • visitor clearance;

  • service access;

  • electrical requirements;

  • hydraulic requirements;

  • compressed-air requirements;

  • maintenance access.

Only then should the architecture be developed.

A successful bauma stand feels designed around the equipment, rather than like a conventional booth into which machinery has been inserted afterwards.

Give Hero Equipment the Right Space

Large machinery naturally attracts attention.

But poor positioning can reduce its impact.

A hero machine should ideally be:

  • visible from the primary aisle;

  • easy to photograph;

  • accessible for sales demonstrations;

  • connected visually to the brand;

  • supported by technical information.

Avoid surrounding important equipment with unnecessary furniture or graphics.

At bauma, physical scale is already impressive.

Good stand design often means knowing what not to add.

Indoor and Outdoor Stands Need Different Strategies

bauma uses enormous indoor halls and outdoor exhibition areas.

The latest official figures show 414,000 m² outdoors alone, more than twice the indoor hall space.

An indoor booth may prioritize:

  • architectural branding;

  • components;

  • smaller machinery;

  • screens;

  • meetings;

  • hospitality.

An outdoor stand may require:

  • weather-resistant construction;

  • machinery staging;

  • demonstrations;

  • elevated viewing areas;

  • stronger long-distance branding;

  • durable flooring;

  • drainage;

  • technical infrastructure.

Outdoor stand planning should therefore be treated almost like a temporary construction project.

Plan Demonstrations Before Designing the Stand

Movement is one of the strongest attention tools at a machinery exhibition.

Visitors may want to see:

  • lifting;

  • cutting;

  • drilling;

  • crushing;

  • material handling;

  • attachment changes;

  • equipment operation.

But demonstrations introduce additional requirements.

Plan:

  • safety barriers;

  • operator zones;

  • crowd areas;

  • visibility;

  • emergency access;

  • power;

  • noise;

  • dust;

  • debris.

The demonstration should feel exciting without making the booth difficult or unsafe to navigate.

Use Technical Information Selectively

Construction-equipment buyers care about specifications.

But that does not mean every wall should become a technical catalogue.

Prioritize information such as:

  • capacity;

  • operating weight;

  • power;

  • productivity;

  • fuel efficiency;

  • electric operation;

  • durability;

  • service intervals.

Detailed specifications can then be available through:

  • screens;

  • brochures;

  • QR codes;

  • technical consultation.

Use the physical environment to communicate the main commercial message first.

Components Need Their Own Display Strategy

Not every bauma exhibitor sells complete machines.

The fair also includes companies offering:

  • sheet-metal products;

  • wear parts;

  • attachments;

  • hydraulics;

  • drivetrain components;

  • filtration;

  • electrical systems;

  • construction tools;

  • structural parts.

Smaller products can easily disappear in such a large exhibition environment.

Use:

  • illuminated niches;

  • technical sample tables;

  • cutaway sections;

  • rotating displays;

  • component walls.

This is particularly relevant to Maher Design’s direct bauma experience.

Our portfolio includes both Önder Metal at Bauma Munich, categorized around sheet metal and construction machinery, and Las Zırh at Bauma Munich, focused on industrial heavy-machinery and construction applications.

Make the Brand Visible From a Distance

bauma is enormous.

Visitors may walk significant distances between halls and outdoor zones.

Brand visibility therefore matters.

Useful elements can include:

  • high-level fascia;

  • illuminated logos;

  • towers;

  • suspended branding where permitted;

  • large colour blocks;

  • oversized product imagery.

But there is an important distinction:

visibility is not the same as visual noise.

One clear identity can outperform several competing signs.

Show What the Machinery Achieves

Equipment specifications are important.

The result is often more persuasive.

Show applications such as:

  • road construction;

  • mining;

  • quarrying;

  • tunnelling;

  • demolition;

  • infrastructure;

  • earthmoving;

  • concrete production.

Large screens can show equipment operating in real conditions while the physical machine or component is displayed nearby.

This creates:

Product → Application → Result

instead of simply:

Product → Technical specification

Digitalization Should Support the Equipment

bauma increasingly focuses on technological progress, digitalization and future-oriented industry solutions. The organizer describes the event as both an innovation driver and industry thought leader.

Digital presentations may demonstrate:

  • fleet management;

  • telematics;

  • machine monitoring;

  • predictive maintenance;

  • automation;

  • digital twins;

  • remote operation.

Use dedicated demonstration screens rather than displaying generic corporate videos everywhere.

A technical buyer should be able to understand exactly what the digital system improves.

Sustainability Needs Numbers

Sustainability is also a major industry theme at bauma.

Useful messages include:

  • fuel reduction;

  • electric operation;

  • emissions improvements;

  • energy efficiency;

  • recycled materials;

  • longer component life;

  • lower maintenance requirements.

Concrete claims are far stronger than simply covering the stand in green graphics.

Meeting Areas Matter More Than You Think

bauma may look like a machinery exhibition, but major equipment sales still depend on conversations.

Visitors may be discussing:

  • dealership agreements;

  • distribution;

  • procurement;

  • fleet purchases;

  • project specifications;

  • OEM cooperation;

  • regional partnerships.

Depending on stand size, provide:

  • quick consultation counters;

  • open meeting tables;

  • semi-private areas;

  • enclosed rooms;

  • hospitality.

The larger the potential transaction, the more valuable privacy becomes.

Hospitality Can Become a Commercial Tool

bauma runs for seven days, longer than many major trade fairs.

That creates sustained pressure on exhibitors and visitors.

Hospitality can therefore be especially valuable.

Consider:

  • coffee;

  • refreshments;

  • bar or catering;

  • lounge areas;

  • staff support.

For larger international stands, hospitality becomes part of relationship building.

Storage and Technical Areas Must Be Planned Early

Machinery exhibitions require substantial hidden infrastructure.

You may need storage for:

  • brochures;

  • spare parts;

  • tools;

  • safety equipment;

  • staff belongings;

  • catering;

  • cleaning materials.

Technical personnel may also require a dedicated service area.

Do not allow operational equipment to accumulate in visitor-facing spaces.

What Should You Send Your Stand Builder?

Before concept design begins, prepare:

  • booth dimensions;

  • indoor or outdoor location;

  • number of open sides;

  • official floor plan;

  • machine list;

  • dimensions and weights;

  • lifting requirements;

  • loading requirements;

  • utilities;

  • operating demonstrations;

  • safety zones;

  • component displays;

  • screens;

  • meeting requirements;

  • hospitality;

  • storage;

  • branding guidelines;

  • project budget.

For bauma, the quality of this initial technical brief can significantly affect the entire project.

Why Work With a Turnkey Exhibition Partner in Europe?

International exhibitors at bauma already have enough operational complexity.

They need to manage:

  • machinery transport;

  • customs;

  • technical teams;

  • product launches;

  • demonstrations;

  • buyers;

  • dealer meetings.

A turnkey stand partner can manage the exhibition environment separately.

Maher Design supports European exhibition projects with:

  • concept design;

  • technical development;

  • fabrication;

  • machinery integration;

  • product displays;

  • graphics;

  • AV;

  • logistics coordination;

  • installation;

  • on-site supervision;

  • dismantling.

Most importantly for bauma exhibitors, Maher Design’s portfolio already includes two stands delivered at bauma Munich — Önder Metal and Las Zırh.

That gives us direct experience with the event rather than only general construction-industry knowledge.

When Should You Start Planning?

For bauma, earlier is better than for almost any other fair.

The organizer has already published a detailed planning schedule.

Now–January 2027 — Exhibitor Application

The application period is already open, and 29 January 2027 is the application deadline for main exhibitors and the beginning of booth allocation.

Spring–Summer 2027 — Placement

Messe München expects placement proposals to begin from spring/summer 2027.

This is an excellent stage to start:

  • stand strategy;

  • equipment selection;

  • budget;

  • contractor discussions.

Mid–Late 2027 — Concept & Technical Development

Once the space is confirmed:

  • develop the architecture;

  • position machinery;

  • plan utilities;

  • determine lifting and logistics;

  • plan meetings and hospitality.

Late 2027–Early 2028 — Production Planning

The exhibitor shop is scheduled to go live in fall 2027, while admission invoices have a 12 January 2028 payment deadline.

By this stage, major technical decisions should already be locked.

bauma Build-Up Is Much Longer Than a Typical Fair

This is particularly important.

The official 2028 setup schedule begins:

28 February 2028 — outdoor area

and:

22 March 2028 — indoor halls

with final hall completion by 2 April 2028 before the show opens on 3 April.

That alone demonstrates how technically demanding bauma is.

Large machinery, cranes, vehicles and complex outdoor installations require substantially longer logistics windows than ordinary exhibition stands.

About Messe München and the bauma Fairgrounds

bauma occupies both the Messe München halls and extensive outdoor areas.

The latest event used:

200,000 m² indoors

plus:

414,000 m² outdoors.

The current hall-plan page notes that the detailed 2028 site plan will be published later; the available map still refers to the 2025 configuration.

That means exhibitors should always use the latest organizer-issued hall and technical documentation once their 2028 placement is confirmed.

What Makes a Strong bauma Stand?

For bauma, I would prioritize eight things.

1. Machinery First

Design around what is physically coming to Munich.

2. Long-Distance Visibility

Make the brand recognizable across large halls and outdoor areas.

3. Demonstration Planning

Movement attracts visitors when it is safely controlled.

4. Clear Technical Communication

Prioritize the specifications buyers care about.

5. Product/Application Connection

Show where and how the equipment performs.

6. Strong Meeting Capacity

Support dealers, buyers and procurement discussions.

7. Operational Back-of-House

Storage and technical areas matter.

8. Reliable Execution

At bauma, logistics and technical coordination are as important as aesthetics.
